Let Me Fall Back...

During our class on Monday, I had a feeling the professor was setting us up for an exercise. After the professor gave us the opportunity as a class to adjust our test and pick and choose different options, I knew all hell would break loose. As the clamoring started I decided to sit back and see the different options that came up. Being one of the many that received a low grade, all I wanted was a curve and the dropping of the lowest grade. Those two options came up relatively quickly. Therefore, I think the method I chose was closest to avoidance. This wasn’t because there was no chance of winning but due to the fact that what I wanted had already been covered; anything else was extra. A few things that I did notice was the way males and females differ in how they express their ideas and suggestions. The male students seemed straight to the point and showed leadership whereas female students showed more emotion. If I could choose another method in this decision-making process it would probably be collaboration. Since it is a large class, I feel that it would have been much more effective if we divided the room into sections and have each group collaborate with each other to come up with an ultimate decision.

Wow! i wonder who else felt that Professor was setting us up for unforgettable experience? I felt exactly the same way once he said he would let US decide what to do with the exams.

Also, I find the observation about how different boys and girls in the class handled stress rather interesting. I am a girl and, of course, my first reaction is to say "no you are wrong" but thinking back I realize that actually you are right. The only people who literally screamed where girls. Yeah, they gave everyone one more reason to think that women are more emotional than men and have worse control over their feelings. That might be right; however, very often women try to assert their position through screaming because in the male dominated society women' opinion has no or little authority. And very often the only way for a woman to get what she wants is through emotions and tears. How pitiful is that. I am glad we did not get that far : )

I also chose to avoide the situation since most of the students agreed with dropping the lowest grade and a curve. I agree with you that the decision making process shoul have been more organized. We did not make the effort of dividing the class into gropus.
